Can inflammation and swelling on the finger be treated at home?

Hello I noticed that the middle finger on my right hand is somewhat red and swollen to the side of my fingernail. It feels tender when I touch it. I can t remember injuring the finger but I do bite my nails from time to time. Do I need to seek medical care or is this something I can treat at home?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Probably the inflammation of your finger is caused by the bite, it might be paronychia at this stage considering your prescription.
Paronychia is a common finger infection and is caused by skin bacteria.
You can try warm soaks in warm water or a mixture of warm water and antibacterial soap 50/50, three times daily.
You can take Ibuprofen for pain relief and reducing inflammation.
If it doesn't improve then you should go to the ER for a physical examination.

Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.

My finger is swollen and hard and reddended after working in the garden yesterday. It was possibly from a rose thorn or rasberries prickers. I see no thorn or obvious foreign body under the skin. Besides going to the doctor, what would be the drug of choice? Will Lamisil (I currently am taking the topical cream) help if its from the rose fungus? YYYY@YYYY

Hi Doctor I had a Mallet middle finger injury on Feb. 12th. 2018. The x-ray are negative for broken bones. I have being using a splint 24/7 for 10 weeks. An orthopedic specialist examined the finger at that time and told me the finger is healing. However I have doubts that the tendon has not re-connected, here is why: - the finger is swollen and red, sensible on slight touch - bending of the finger is OK, but the top knuckle of the finger has no structural strength, the knuckle is like rubber - I cannot lock it in straight position My question is do I have a reason to believe the tendon is not re-connecting and if yes what is your recommendation? Thank you
