Can Genital Herpes Spread To Other Parts Of Body?

I was told by my Doctor that I have Genital Herpes 2 years ago. I had questioned this because I was celebate for over 4 years but was told it can lay in your spine for many years. So possibly I was not aware of my first outbreak. My question is I have at least 2 outbreaks a year but always approximately the same spot and always on same side which was my left side. I just recently had an outbreak on the right side and was somewhat confused by this development. Is this possible?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

- Genital herpes unfortunately tends to recur. It will remain confined to the genital area (left to right in the genital area can occur)
- Unless you get immunocompromised for some reason, it won't spread to the rest of your body

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
