Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Anesthesia During Surgery Cause Inability To Urinate?
I m 59 and had double inguinal hernia surgery last year. Afterward had to have a catheter and tamsulosin for the next week as I was unable to urinate after surgery. A cat scan last summer showed an enlarged prostate. Internet research indicated the aftereffects of the anesthetic could have aggravated the condition, causing lack of urination. Now I am wondering if this will happen again if I have a colonoscopy this year.
Thanks for consulting at my virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.
If you take general anesthesia, it leads in some patients to Urinary blockage and that is just a physiological blockage and relieves very soon. But you have an enlarged prostate, so you may need urinary catheterization again for a couple of days. But not necessarily everyone needs it. Sometimes nothing happens to the urination. It also depends which anesthesia they prefer.
Hope I answered all of your health concerns . If you have further questions, feel free to contact me anytime. Always write my name in start of your question in future, and I will get back to you in no time. If satisfied, please give a five Star rating and don't forget to Close the discussion.
Have a wonderful time ahead.
