Can Alcohol Be Consumed While Taking Prodorol

My doctor has prescribed Prodorol (Pur-Bloka) for my trembling hands. I just want to know if I can consume any alcohol while taking the pill and if not, can I take the pill before I go to sleep after I had alcohol? I have to take Prodorol/ Pur-bloka twice a day and I have been taking them for almost a month. The pharmacist first gave me Pur-bloka and when I consumed alcohol I didn t feel strange, but two weeks later the pharmacist gave me Prodorol and said its exactly the same thing, but Prodorol makes me feel extremely drunk after one glass of wine. I don t want to damage my heart or heart valves. I have experienced some chest pains after starting with the prodorol, which I didn t have when taking the pur-bloka. Also, do I have to gradually stop drinking the pills when I need to stop taking them, or can I just stop taking them all at once? I m scared I might get a heart attack if I stop taking them. I am 29 years old, female, active, not in the least overweight, get regular exercise, eat healthy,BUT I smoke. Please give me some more information. Thank you very much.

Hi,

Yes, both pur-bloka and prodorol are the generic names of propranolol which is a beta adrenergic blocker commonly prescribed for heart diseases, anxiety, tremors and so on.
1. If you stop taking propranolol suddenly, it can cause palpitations, tremor, sweating, headache, arrhythmia, angina, rebound hypertension, and even sudden death in patients with heart disease (angina). Therefore the dose of propranolol must be gradually reduced over a period of at least a few weeks under the supervision of your doctor.
2. Consuming alcohol while on propranolol can increase the blood pressure lowering effects of propranolol which can result in severe fall in blood pressure which can make you dizzy or light headed.

If you find propranolol makes you feel dizzy it is best to stop drinking alcohol.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
