Can A Recurrent Staph Infection Become Life Threatening?

My father had knee surgery about 20 years ago. He got a very bad staph infection and stayed in hospital an extended amount of time. He was told by a doctor that if he ever had knee again the staph infection would come out of dormancy and could be life threading. Is this true?
