Can A Change In The Medication From Maxtra 25 Ml To Relent 25ml Relieve Nose Block And Mild Cough In A 20-month-old?
Hi. My son 20 months old is having cold from couple of days. We gave him Maxtra 2.5 ml twice a day and today doctor told us to change to Relent 2.5 ml twice a day. His nose gets blocked in the night and he is not sleeping properly. He is eating well. Morning when he gets up he coughs but seems very mild.
Hello and welcome to Ask A Doctor. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Because of lack of effectiveness and potential for side effects cough and cold medications are not recommended for young child (less than 4-6 years old). The two medicines that you mentioned can both cause restlessness, excitability, and other effects. It will be safer and more effective to use salt water (saline) nose drops. Put one drop into each nostril as often as needed during the day for stuffy nose and another dose at bedtime as well as whenever he awakens at night. These drops are available over the counter in the pharmacy or supermarket. Also offer plenty of fluids to keep him well hydrated. This will help to make the nasal secretions thin and watery and easier to sneeze or cough out.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help.
