Can Oxycodone Be Taken While On Gabapentin And Tramadol?
My husband is 79 Years Old and is taking 75 mg Oxcarbaziane - 2xday (1/2 tab each time, of 150 MG Tab for the first 2 weeks from date of 12/15/17). It has been prescribed to hopefully help relieve damaged nerve pain in his left shoulder and arm (caused by SHINGLES - onset 7/15/2016). At this point Oxcarbazine and Gabapentin and Tramadol are not controlling the awful pain. He would like to take an Oxycodone Tab, along with his other meds. is this an acceptable combination? Thank you. Genell Homner, Mentor, OH

Internal Medicine Specialist, Dr. Malik's Response
Hello and welcome,
It is not advised to combine tramadol with oxycodone. Your husband is already on tramadol - a non-narcotic opioid analgesic which is used to treat moderate to severe pain. Oxycodone is also an opioid analgesic but it is narcotic (like morphine) and it is more potent than tramadol. Combination of oxycodone with tramadol is generally avoided especially in older population because of the additive side effects of each medicine. Combination may cause central nervous system and respiratory system depressions. But if the pain is persistent and not controlled with tramadol, he can be switched to oxycodone tablets and stop taking tramadol. Please, consult your treating doctor for the switching from tramadol to oxycodone. Please, note that patients may become addicted to opiates and abuse the medicines.
I hope the above information will be helpful for you. Please, feel free to ask me if there is anything else you need to know.
Thank you, Malik Amonov MD
