Can Orlistat Cause Weight Loss And Osteoarthritis?

Hello! I have been on irlistat for 3 months and have lost 8kg from an initial weight of 114kg. I am being reviewed by my gp next week. I gave severe osteoarthritis and am losing weight for a hip op. In the last 3 months the pain has got a lot worse and the difonac sodium appears to be inadmffective. Could Orlistat by having a negative effect? Trying to do gentle exercise at the gym but some days the pain is too bad. Thanks

Hi,

Orlistat belongs to statins and it reduces weight. It is used for obesity primarily. However it decreases the absorption of vitamins like A, D, E, and K in our body. It also decreases fat absorption. Overall loss of weight has good effect on joints and relieves from pain.

But due to loss of vitamins like D it can cause bone pain. At the same time it causes kidney or gall stones which can result in pain referred to back or limbs. However the chances of osteoarthritis are least or decimal or nill because it reduces obesity which relieves our joints hip, knee from strain thus allowing joint to work properly. Osteoarthritis in your case may be due to obesity as you had earlier.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
