Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello. I am a counselor at an elementary school. I have a child at my school (7 years old-male) that has been diagnosed ADHD and 10 mg metadate was prescribed for child. Parents are hesitant to start medication, but in my professional opinion, it would definitely help his ability to focus and complete academic tasks. What advice can I give them. They are worried about him losing weight as he is small for his size.
Hello, It is nice to hear that you are trying to help out the children as well as parents in this case. I think you need to address their primary concern of weight loss. Make them realise that not all children consuming Metadate(methylphenidate) will have this a side effect. Second, as you mentioned you can explain them about the benefits of medications in both academics and personal life of the child. Make them realise that the benefits will outweigh the risks and that is the sole reason the child is put on the medications. I would hope the child is already offered cognitive behavioural therapy(CBT). And it would be in the best interest of the child that both medications and CBT is taken. I hope the above points will help you in tackling the parent's anxiety. Thanks.
