Can Lithium Be Taken While On Prozac And Adderall?

My daughter has been diagnosed with Cornelia De Lange Syndrome (ADD, self mutilation depression). She was taking Prozac and Adderall but was getting severly depressed around 5 pm. She would have bouts of grabbing knives and threatening suicide. Her therapysyt recommended when it happened again to call police. Was done and she was put in hospital behavorial unit. They prescribe Adderall in afternoon also and higher does of Prozac. What worries me is that they prescribed 300 mg of lithium.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Lithium can be taken along with Prozac and Adderall. However, Prozac along with lithium have reported causing serotonin syndrome, which may include symptoms such as confusion, hallucination, seizure, extreme changes in blood pressure, increased heart rate, fever, muscle pain, etc. If your daughter develops any of these symptoms, discontinue the medications and take her to the ER immediately. 300 mg is not a high dose of lithium. Your daughter should get lithium levels, thyroid function, and renal function test checked monthly initially, followed by every 6 months while on lithium.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Lekshmi Rita Venugopal
