Can Implanon Which Expires In Three Months Be Used?

Hi Doctor, should i allow the nurse to insert implanon on my arm even if the expiry date on the pack is within 3 months from now. I am asking this because it is supposed to be inserted to provide contraceptive cover for up to 3 years hence i am worried about the expiry date.

Hello,

If the expiry date of the Implanon on the pack is within 3 months you should not allow it to be inserted in your arm. Else again you will have to get it replaced if you don't want to compromise with the efficacy of the device. Get a fresh Implanon, check the expiry date before getting it inserted as the efficacy lasts for 3 years then it has to be replaced. Implanon's are 99% effective. The expiry date matters as it may interfere with the efficacy of the device.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
