Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to see a dentist because I've been experiencing toothache. It is due to my wisdom tooth who has no space to come out and she told me that I need to see an oral surgeon for surgery. Unfortunately the area is already infected and told me to get some antibiotics. When I went to pick up the medicine the bottle indicates that it is Ibuprofen 600mg. Can Ibuprofen be used as antibiotics? It definitely help with the pain but can it be helpful for the infection or did she make a mistake by prescribing me Ibuprofen?
I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..
As per your complain it seems that you have an impacted wisdom tooth and the gum flap over wisdom tooth is swollen and it is leading to Pericoronitis.. It occurs due to accumulation of debris and food particles below the gum flap leading to infection and inflammation and for this antibiotics are needed to be taken along with anti inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen.. Therefore I would suggest you to consult your treating dentist and get evaluated and he can advise you antibiotics like Augmentin along with Ibuprofen for relief.. You need not to worry as antibiotics can be taken with Ibuprofen as they do not cause any severe drug interaction.. You can also do warm saline gargles and do cool compreses over the cheek.
Hope this information helps..
Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
