Can Amlodipine, Being An Ace Inhibitor, Cause High Potassium Levels?
I am Type 1 diabetic (49 years) with 6.6 A1C. I have used Lisinipril for many years as an ace inhibitor (not for high blood pressure). Over the past year I have received repeated high potassium levels with otherwise normal bloodwork. My doctor recently recommended switching from Lisinipril to amlodipine besylate as a way of getting my potassium back into the normal range. Before I switch, I did my own research and learned that amlodipine is also an ace inhibitor, thus it will also cause high potassium levels. Right? I would appreciate a 2nd opinion. Thank you.

Amlodipine is not an ACE inhibitor. It is a calcium channel blocker and it does not cause high potassium levels in the blood. You can use it without any fear of high potassium as prescribed by your treating physician.
