Can Amaryl Be Taken When Diagnosed With Allergy To Sulpha Drugs?
my dr just prescribed a new rx for me for amaryl. my husband went to the pharmacy to pick it up this evening and the pharmacist told him I shouldn't take it since I am allergic to sulpha drugs. I thought there was a difference between the sulfonarheas(sp) for diabetic medications and the sulpha drugs class (antibiotics) that I react to... am I correct or is he. I currently take metformin and the only problems are gastrointestinal and I cannot tolerate the 1500 at night and the 500mg in the am. she wanted me to take this amaryl with only 500 mg with my evening meal and my 500 in the am meal.
It's not safe to take Amaryl if you are allergic to sulfa drugs.
Amaryl (Glimepiride) is a sulfur containing (sulfonylurea) oral anti-diabetic medicine prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes not controlled through diet and exercise alone. It may be taken alone or in combination with Metformin to control the blood sugar levels.
Since you're allergic to sulfur or sulfur containing drugs, you should not take Amaryl as it also contains sulfur.
Consult your doctor for an alternate effective but a safer medicine to be taken along with Metformin for the control of blood sugar.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
