Can Albuterol Be Taken For COPD?

Does albuterol build up in your system? My mother has COPD and has been diagnosed fro 2 years. She has struggled the last 3 months-since she had a respiratory infection and started using a nebulizer with albuterol at home. It does seem to give her some immediate relief for shortness of breath. But the side effects listed are many of problems she is having.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Albuterol is a drug widely used for episodes of COPD (to quiet down crises). There are possible side effects, as it happens with any medication, but it is generally well tolerated and safe to use. It does not accumulate in the body and the medical effect and side effects should not last long so if she has symptoms days after using it, it is very likely they are not related to Albuterol.

I hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
