Are Tingling, Twitching And Prickly Waves Of Sensation In The Body Of An Alcoholic A Concern?

Hello. I am 27, and have been a heavy drinker since I was 18 or 19. Lately I have been drinking more than ever--up to 30 beers ever other day. Lately I have been experiencing symptoms that lead me to believe I have developed alcoholic neuropathy. It began with irritating twitches/spasms in my legs that seemed to culminate in involuntary kicks. Just a week or so ago, I began experiencing tingling, prickly waves of sensation (mainly in my legs, but off and on throughout my body) that alarmed me so much I have stopped drinking. I also have a strange back ache, and my legs continue to twitch and flop around. I cannot get a wink of sleep. My primary question is, can I expect this to go away, or is it already in too advanced of a stage? I plan to abstain from alcohol indefinitely and take a daily vitamin supplement. Thank you for any advice.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Drinking alcohol heavily for long duration likely results in the symptoms you have mentioned.

As sudden withdrawal in such cases is not advisable until and unless your doctor suggests so with appropriate medicines that will prevent side effects due to sudden alcohol withrawal.

As per the details you have given, it appears as you have never visited a doctor for your symptoms.

I would suggest you rather than taking any medicines or even multivitamins on your own, it's better to visit a doctor who can guide you on managing alcohol issue.

Rehabilitation centres are always the best places to visit as they provide appropriate counselling along with medical management for patients who are drinking alcohol for a long period.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Manisha Auradkar, General & Family Physician
