Are There Any Risks Associated With Abortion When Diagnosed With Dermoid Ovarian Cyst?

I am 8 weeks pregnant and chose not to keep it. Are there any risks associated with a surgical abortion knowing I have a 4cm dermoid cyst in my left ovary and also pelvic varices? I am 38 year old and had two previous abortions one at 20 and the other at 29.

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

A first trimester surgical abortion is generally extremely safe when performed by an experienced operator and there are very few conditions that increase the risk of the procedure. None of your health conditions fall into this category.

Your dermoid cyst is on your ovary, which is outside the uterus, so it doesn not come into contact with any instruments used for the procedure. Neither should your pelvic varices for the same reason.

You may eventually need surgery for your dermoid cyst if it continues to grow, but it is best done as a separate procedure.

So you are at no additional risk because of your health conditions to have a surgical abortion.

I hope I was able to adequatelt answer your question today and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes, Dr. Brown
