As per your complain, swelling and soreness of tonsil can be most probably due to infection caused by either bacteria or virus. Secondly it can also be due to other causes like Post nasal drip, tonsil stones and acid reflux. Whatever be the cause steroids will help in reducing swelling and inflammation and it will finally help in providing relief. But you also need to get evaluated clinically for the exact cause of the symptoms and treatment can be done accordingly. You can be advised antibiotics, anti inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen along with warm saline gargles and steam inhalation.
