Are Stabbing Pain And Swelling On Heel Post Injury A Cause For Concern?

my husband stepped on a toothpick Wed. Dr. gave him antibiotic and said he thought that infection may be near joint of the big right toe. The past 2 days there is stabbing pain intermittently and difficulty walking. There is no redness but there is swelling. It sometimes feels better after ice is applied. Should we go to the ER to have it looked at again. His regular physician is not in and the urgent care he originally went to is in Pa. and he is home in NH.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It may be best, since there is still significant pain and swelling, for him to visit his doctor for an assessment.

He or she would be able to determine if any additional treatment is needed.

He may need to be given pain killers for a time and , if the antibiotic is not effective, it may need to be changed.

I hope this helps
