Are Sores On The Penis And The Mouth Suggestive Of HIV Infection?
My son just called and says he has sores on his penis and some in his mouth. He is scared to death he has HIV. He has already gone to get a blood test. He says he had unprotected sex about 3-4 weeks ago. He does have a history of herpes that he takes medication for but says that is not working.
As per your complain sores on penis and in mouth after 3-4 weeks of having unprotected sex seems to be most probably due to Herpes Virus Infection causing cold sores.. It does not seems to be HIV as it takes years for HIV to become symptomatic and as of now the most probable cause seems to be Herpes..
I would suggest you to take him to an Infectious Medicine Specialist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like Viral Culture, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Antigen-Antibody reaction can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly.
He can be advised anti-viral medications like Acyclovir, Valacyclovir to be taken for an extended period of time and along with it topical application of antiviral medications like Valtrex.. Along with it as it is communicable infection, therefore he should keep all his personal belongings like towels etc separate and avoid physical contact with other individuals..
Hope this information helps. Thanks and regards. Dr.Honey Nandwani Arora.
