Are Panic Attacks, Upset Stomach And Swollen Ankles Suggestive Of Lexapro Withdrawal?

Hi. I am 3 weeks off of Lexapro and having nocturnal panic attacks, some upset stomach, and swollen ankles and fingers. Could swelling be a side effect of lexapro withdrawal? I seem to have gotten through the dizziness, but panic and swelling have taken its place...I was on Lexapro for 7 mos.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Sudden stoppage of Lexapro causes withdrawal symptoms like feeling dizzy, nausea, vomiting, nightmares, stomach upset, irritability, headache, paresthesia, panic attacks, etc. The side effects cause swelling of legs, feet, ankles, etc. They go away on their own after a couple of days but if it causes discomfort, get physically examined by a GP, you may need medications. Always detox under a GP or a detox center. 48-72 hours after your last dose of medication withdrawal symptoms start showing up. These symptoms need to be managed & treated in proper time.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K, General & Family Physician
