Are Pain And Swelling On The Knuckles Symptoms Of A Fracture?

Hello Dr., my husband slipped on the ice and the top of his hand (across the knuckles) has hurt ever since; he can move his fingers. He used an ice pack and some of the swelling is down but not completely. Can anything be done if it s fractured? He made an apt to see our family doctor but can t get in for 2 weeks. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you. R. Furlong

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

If there is pain and swelling, there is a chance that it is a fracture. The most conclusive way is to get an x-ray of the hand done.

Meanwhile, he can take an over the counter painkiller to relieve pain. Keep the hand movements restricted by applying a crape bandage. If it is a fracture then the hand has to be put in a cast.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nazma Amman
