Are No Periods A Sign Of Pregnancy?

Hi doc, I'm 24 years old, 53.8 kg with about 160cm height. I have missed my periods but my pregnancy test came to be negative and the scan was also nothing to be seen inside. My doc prescribed me with Norethisterone 5mg tablet, 3 times daily for 5 days. Yesterday was my last day of taking the tablets but I'm still not having period yet, not even the pre-menstrual symptoms as I've been suffering the cramps monthly before the period come. I have regular menstrual cycle - 28days. The first date of my last period was on 11th july but i'm not having any period until today. Am i pregnant? Please help.

OBGYN 's  Response
Hi,
I have gone through your query and understood the concern. If you have never missed a period like this before, pregnancy is the first concern. Since you got this ruled out, hormone imbalance is the next possible cause. Withdrawal bleeding can be seen 3-7 days after completion of hormone treatment. Sometimes, it may take up to ten days. So, you have to wait to see a period. If you do not see a period even after a week you should go for further investigation along with a repeat trans-vaginal sonogram and complete hormone profile. Management also includes maintenance of a healthy weight, regular exercise and a healthy diet. Hope this helps.

OBGYN Dr. Jacqueline Brown's  Response

Hello, and I hope I can help you today.

Irregular periods can because by stress, travel, and even worrying about getting pregnant. The fact that you had a negative pregnancy test means that you are not pregnant, as there can be other reasons why you missed your period.

Normally, the Northisterone tablets are supposed to cause a menstrual cycle to begin after you finish the medication (usually within 3-7 days of finishing the pills). So you may just need to wait longer for your period to begin. If a week goes by since you finished the pills and you still do not menstruate, you should repeat a pregnancy test to make sure.

If you continue to have irregular or missed menstrual cycles, you may want to see a GYN doctor for evaluation of your hormones to make sure that there are no problems. However one irregular or missed menstrual cycle once in a while happens to most women in their lifetime and is a chance event.

I hope I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.

Best wishes,

Dr. Brown
