Hello, I am a doctor. I had a very minor needle stick injury 2 weeks ago (25g needle, infiltrating subcut local anaesthetic, v superficial - very little bleeding only when squeezing my finger, no visible blood on needle). I am not sure of patient s HIV status but from low risk group. I decided not to report it/pursue it as decided risk was negligible, but bled and washed it. 2 days ago (12 days post injury) I developed flu like symptoms (low grade fever, mild sore throat, mildly tender cervical lymph nodes). I realise that it is most likely simply an incidental viral upper respiratory tract infection but nonetheless I am now very anxious. I have read that the HIV duo test is reasonably accurate (80-90%) accurate at 2 weeks. Is that percentage increased if symptoms are present ie if this were a seroconversion illness would the test be more accurate? I am desperate to find out as quickly as possible. What is your recommended testing?
