Are Itchy Nipples A Symptom Of Breast Cancer?

I had breast cancer when I was 32 and again at 53. My 31 year old daughter is concerned because her right nipple has been itching for the last 2 months. I heard of nipple discharge being a symptom, but never heard of nipple itching as being a symptom. Should we be concerned?

Hi,

I appreciate your concern, and it is very important to be aware and cautious about cancer, especially when you have had this unfortunate experience twice.
Usually nipple itchiness is not associated with cancer, however since you had a history of breast cancer, your daughter is definitely at risk. I would recommend following options for her:-
Self-breast examination - look for a lump, swelling, skin changes at least once a month, if found any change that was not present previously kindly bring to the notice of your doctor especially breast surgeon.
Examination by an expert at least every 6 months. Also, I would recommend genetic testing for your daughter for BRCA genes which are commonly associated with breast cancer that runs in families.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
