Are Excess Fluid And Larger Left Side Of A Brain Of Fetus A Cause For Concern?

I had an ultrasound today. I am 19 weeks pregnant with my 3rd child. Healthy in every way. However, they found abnormalities in the brain of my daughter (baby). Left side growing larger than right Small Cyst And some excess fluid. They have referred me to a specialist, but said because they saw no other markers I shouldn t be too alarmed. What could these be indicators of and what causes these things to happen?

Hi,

Excess fluid and asymmetry in the size of the brain can be indicators of various fetal brain abnormalities, but it's important to note that not all cases of these findings are necessarily concerning or harmful. Some potential causes of excess fluid and asymmetry in the fetal brain include genetic disorders, infections, traumatic brain injury, bleeding within the brain, and developmental disorders.

However, in many cases, the underlying cause is unknown. The small cyst found in your daughter's brain could be a choroid plexus cyst, which is a common finding in prenatal ultrasounds and typically not a cause for concern. Choroid plexus cysts are usually benign and tend to resolve on their own before birth or shortly after.

It's important to follow up with your specialist and discuss the findings in detail. They may recommend additional tests or ultrasounds to further evaluate the brain abnormalities and determine if any additional management or treatment is necessary. It's also important to remember that every pregnancy and every case is unique, so the best course of action will depend on your circumstances.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
