Are Burps Followed By Headache, Shoulder Pain And Nausea A Cause For Concern?

Hi doctor, My husband age 33, gets frequent episodes of continuous burps with headaches and shoulder pain. He becomes mighty uncomfortable and complaints of trapped gas in stomach. It mostly happens on the day he is too tired, or ate irregularly, or did not sleep well or drank very less water like 3 glasses in a day. When he gets these symptoms he drinks many glasses of water till the gas is released and then he gets fine. Otherwise in extreme cases he gets nausea. I m worried whether this is normal or is there any other underlying problem? Is there a medicine that can help him relieve these symptoms when they reappear?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms are typical of GERD(gastroesophageal reflux disease). As of now you can simple measures like avoiding spicy foods and sleeping in slightly head up position to prevent reflux.

Over the counter available antacids like omeprazole or pantoprazole can also be tried. If symptoms persists better to consult a gastroenterologist and plan for an endoscopy.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family physician
