Hello,

Diarrhea in a 6 months old baby may be due to viral like rotavirus, bacterial, parasitic, food allergy, or lactose intolerance. The treatment options are oral rehydration solution is the treatment of choice. This solution can be prepared at home by mixing a pinch of salt and sugar to a glass of drinking water. Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance must be prevented.

Walamycin syrup and satrogyl can be used for 3 days. Oral rehydration solution is to be given every hourly. Even after 3 days, diarrhea persists, take the baby to a pediatrician. Few signs which are not to be neglected in infants are excessive crying, high fever, vomiting, not accepting feeds, lethargic or inactive child, or loss of skin turgor with sunken eyeballs. If any of the above symptoms are present baby needs immediate attention by a pediatric doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
