About Two Weeks Ago I Started Having What I Thought

About two weeks ago I started having what I thought was a usual seasonal allergy attack. About 4 days later it felt more like a cold, which didn't concern or surprise me because I'm a college student and colds and the like are very common. A couple days later I was feeling a bit better; I looked in the mirror to find my tonsils slightly swollen with white spots which I immediately identified as tonsilitis. I went to the school health services center 5 days ago who gave me a Z-pack antibiotic course. Three days ago, I developed a high fever (104°), severe sore throat, headache, loss of appetite, swollen gums, and a moderate cough. Despite the new symptoms, my tonsils no longer appear to be infected. The student health services center ordered a Monospot test which came back negative for mononucleosis, and have me scheduled for a followup at the end of the week. Does this set of symptoms/timeline sound familiar at all? I've never had my gums swell up before, as I have very good oral hygiene habits, so that confuses me quite a bit. Thanks.
