Question: my life line screening panel results for tests on liver enzymes revealed Normal range on AST of 38 IU/L with normal 0-40 and abnormal for ALT 82 IU/L normal range 0-32. Please tell me what this means? And if I lower the ALT does this take care of the problem. I have read a bit and have some knowledge. Everything points to liver damage? is this reversible. Just got the report yesterday. Everything else is okay while I am low end pre-diabetic and low creatine ,5 shoudle .57-1.mg. I do not drink and am not overweight; I have taken synthroid for an inactive thyroid gland for most of my live m, since 22 yrs of age. drink or possibly cinnamon caused liver toxicity. This is what I have read that it indicates and this is my history. I have consumed a lot of cinnamon, on yogurt on ice cream in coffee. And have not used sparingly, the cinnamon and have just read of tis toxicity if overdone. I probably have consumed easily a tablespoon a day for much of the time for a couple of years.

Brief Answer:
Nothing wrong with enzyme level.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Director and thank you for choosing 'Ask A Doctor' service for your query,
Firstly I would like to ask that were there any symptoms you were having or was this a normal routine check-up.

To be clinically(Medically significant) minimum of two liver enzymes should be elevated three times the maximum normal value.

So if the results were a part of normal examination there is nothing wrong with you or your liver.
Doctors treat symptoms and not numbers. Among thousands of parameters in our body, a few can be mildly deranged at a time that does not mean that there is something wrong with the body.

No test advised.
Cinnamon is not related to this mild elevation(Get the same test repeated at other laboratories and slight variations would be there).

Cinnamon, Yoghurt, etc are all good for the body. However, too much of anything is good for nothing so avoid taking it too much.

Your liver function tests are clinically normal.
Hope I was clear and easy to understand.
Feel free to follow up.
Regards

I am so relieved to hear this is normal. I have been quite alarmed, such a relief. I have not had any symptoms just thought the screenings were a good idea. My local doctor is a hands off less is more fellow. How would I lower my ALT naturally and would this make for a healthier liver? Thank you Suzy Herron
