Brief Answer:
most cases not serious, enlarged lymph nodes most common reason

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The area of the neck involved was not mentioned but there are different structures that can cause a lump to be present.

IN the front of the neck, there is the thyroid gland. Enlargement of the thyroid gland can sometimes occur if there are abnormal levels of thyroid hormones present. It is checked with an ultrasound and blood tests to check hormone levels. In most persons, this is easily treated.

Cysts (sacs that can hold a small amount of fluid)- can also sometimes occur in this area, most do not cause any problems but can be easily removed if they do.

Lymph nodes can be found to the sides of the neck along where the muscles are , can also be found in the area behind the ear and also under the chin in certain areas. Lymph nodes enlarge if there is any infection or inflammation in the head, neck, throat or face eg a rash or cough or cold or ear infection or sore throat.
Most lymph nodes decrease within 3 to 4 weeks after the infection has resolved (eg cold or flu or rash improves)

Enlarged lymph nodes are the most common for lumps in the neck.

Trauma to the neck can also cause a swelling or spasm of the muscles of the neck.

A lipoma, which is a lump caused by a collection of fat, can also occur in the neck. This is not cancerous and is only removed if it is causing problems.

Normally when a person detects a lump, they can approximate the size and note if there are any changes over the next week or two unless it becomes painful or causes any problems. You can consider visiting your doctor for an assessment if you remain concern, he or she would note the location, size, whether it is tender, moving, hard/firm/soft etc.

Because the exact location of the lump is not known or it cannot felt , it would be difficult to say exactly what it is is over the computer but as mentioned, enlarged lymph nodes are the most common reason.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions

Brief Answer:
most are definitely not cancer, though this can occur

Detailed Answer:
HI

Lumps in the neck can occur in cancer but it is not the most common reason for a lump in the neck.

This means that though cancer is one cause, it is far from being the most common reason for a lump particularly at your age of 27.

The most common reason is infection with the lump being an enlarged lymph node.

It is understandable to be concerned with any lump but most lumps and bumps are not cancerous.
If most lumps were cancerous in any way then the rates of cancer would be extremely high.

If you remain concerned, which is understandable, then you can see your doctor for the lump to be examined and blood tests such as full blood count can be done.

Please feel free to ask any thing else
