What Diet Can Be Followed Post-tonsillectomy?

default
Posted on Tue, 2 Jan 2024
Question: hi, I had my tonsillectomy today and as you can imagine it's very sore and my uvula is huge. I'm struggling to eat and drink yet the nurse told me its important to eat an ordinary diet to reduce the risk of infection so I am somewhat worried about this. It's also already started itching a bit, is this normal? Thank you. XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:

Liquid diet on the first day

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

The first day after the surgery it is always best to be on a cold liquid diet, such as cool soup, juice, popsicles, milkshakes, ice cream and of course, lots of water.

These foods will also relieve the itching you are experiencing but which is normal.

The next day, you need to gradually add soft foods such as mashed potatoes, apple sauce, cream cheese, pudding, etc. By the third day, you should be able to transition to the normal diet.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
