Have A Terrible Chemical Smell To My Urine. It Does

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Mar 2020
Question: have a terrible chemical smell to my urine. It does NOT smell like ammonia at all. My family runs when I head for the bathroom. It is worse when I eat chocolate but goes away completely when I go out of town. I went to the dr and had a urinalysis. He gave me some antibiotics but it came right back after a couple of months. Is it dangerous and how do I make it go away?

Brief Answer:
Have you been checked for diabetes?

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX

It could sound like diabetes, have you been checked for this? Also, did the doctor do urine cultures or simply a dip stick?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

He did a complete urinalysis. I don't know if I've been checked for diabetes but I do have blood work done every 6 months for osteoporosis and I assume that was included.

Could Prolia cause it. I get the shots every 6 months. The thing is - it goes completely away when I leave town.

Brief Answer:
Does it happen anywhere in the house?

Detailed Answer:
Hi again Aalbertsr,

If it was diabetes, it would happen wherever you were. Does it happen everywhere in the house and for everyone using it, or just you?
And, more important: Do you have other symptoms, e.g. painful urination, recent weight loss, extreme fatigue or thirst? Any blood tests?

I think you better go back and reread my original question. This last answer had nothing to do with it.

No symptoms - I'm as healthy as a horse.

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,

The specific smell of urine is associated with diet, but in your particular case, it is difficult to pinpoint what it is. It is however without any clinical significance and there is no reason to suspect that you are anything but healthy.

Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thank you. My Mom has the same problem and she lives 750 miles away. I've been trying for years with eating just one thing for a day or two - then adding one food - then another. I know chocolate makes it worse but not what else. Very discouraging as it bothers my family so much - they insist I'm going to die.
