Would It Be Safe To Resume Swimming As Part Of My Exercise Rehabilitation While On Heart Medication After Stent Placement?

Question: I had a stemi and a stent out in my rca 15 XXXXXXX I was cleared to resume exercising but keep it below 70-75% of XXXXXXX heart rate. I was put on 25mg lopressor which makes my heart rate slower. Also on p!avix and aspirin. The 4 mm drug elluting stent seemed to open my artery completely and left side clear. The perceived exertion scale is imprecise to me. Would it be safe to resume swimming as part of my exercise rehab?

Brief Answer:
why not?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

since your cardiologist allowed you to start exercising, swimming is a great way to do so, provided that you won't try to push yourself beyond your limits. For a 60 years old man the estimated maximum heart rate is approximately 160 beats per minute. 70% of it is a little over 110 beats per minute. I wouldn't recommend going for 110 though at least not early on. Slow effortless swimming should do as an exercise and will probably keep your pulse rate below 100 beats per minute. You should not feel breathless at any time (a useful rule of thumb is to be able to talk normally - without long pauses).

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!

Won't my best blocker keep my rate lower so heart rate will be low anyway?

Brief Answer:
it will keep it lower

Detailed Answer:
Yes it will, this is the reason it's given. By reducing the heart rate it reduces the amount of oxygen the heart needs to consume. It may also decrease your stamina. But the heart rate is still a good way to evaluate intensity, particularly since the perceived exertion scale was difficult for you.

Best regards!
