Question: Ive tecently had gastric sleeve surgery. I'm on my third week post-op and am starting to eat pureed food.

I'm not allowed to drink liquids 30 minutes prior to eating nor 30 minutes after eating.

I have heard many readons why i need to do so but i'd like to have a clear idea as to the medical reason why domeone who had a gastric sleeve operation has to follow these instructions.

Thank you.

Brief Answer:
To avoid vomiting, to have food requirements fulfilled .

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and very specific.
The reasons for the instruction of not having liquids 30 minutes prior or after eating are:
Since the gastric sleeve surgery removes most of the stomach and there is now a small gastric pouch the capacity is reduced.
If you take liquids just before food, the stomach will be full and you will have satiety already and will be difficult to eat anything. Hence the stomach should be empty when you are having food.
Once you have food, the stomach will take time to churn the food and will take tine for gastric emptying and will not allow more of liquids as you may then vomit unnecessarily. Hence avoid liquids even after having food.

I hope this clears your doubts.
