Which Doctor Can Help Diagnose Discharge From The Gums In An Elderly Woman?

Posted on Tue, 23 Oct 2018
Question: I have a 79 year old mom on with diabetes, post polio, previous heart attack/surgery, anxiety and depression with NO TEETH and primary DO sent her to oral surgeon who said its medical and not dental but jawbone has oozing and something is DEFINITELY going on. Wants to do biopsy. I have been online/telephone for 4 hours now trying to find someone who can tell us what type doctor would be best for her. The current oral surgeon does not take medicare or Tricare for life and said Tricare wouldn't cover because dental. If it's not dental why would he do surgery and he won't without payment but she is not covered. So, question is "What is the best type of doctor she needs to see especially if it may be a possibility of cancer?"

Brief Answer:

Oral surgeon for biopsy!

Detailed Answer:

Hi and thanks so much for this query.

We need a surgeon to biopsy this lesion and analyze. Further care would solely depend on this.

There would be cultures as well as pathological exam. Cultures to look for bacteria/germs and pathology to see whether it is cancer.

An oral surgeon is your ideal doctor to go to.

I think you should talk with your insurance provider so that they can tell you who in the network covers this.

I hope this guides. I wish you well.
