What To Do After An Eye Poke?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Jun 2014
Question: My 11 year old managed to poke herself in the eye with scissors when she reached up, without thinking, to push hair out of her face. No pain except when she poked it. There is no drainage or any other problem other than the redness. There is nothing open other than the ER right now. Does it look like we can just monitor it, or should we take her in? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
It does not require emergency treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I am Dr. DADAPEER K, an Ophthalmologist and I answer health problems related to eye.

It seems from the history that your 11 year old poked her eye with scissors. I went through the photo attached with the question, it shows a spot of subconjunctival hemorrhage as a result of collection of blood under the conjunctiva which inturn is the result of bleeding caused by the impact of injury. This is not a serious condition and does not require any treatment and it will resolve over 1-2 weeks as the blood gets absorbed.

Since there is no watering, pain, vision problems, there is no need to worry. If there any of these symptoms then need to consult ophthalmologist.

Hence the injury appears to be limited only to conjunctiva in the form of subconjunctival hemorrhage which does not require emergency treatment. Hence no need to worry and you can take her/him after appointment with your doctor.

Hope I have answered your question and the information is helpful to you.

Thank you
