Question: Hello Doctor! This question is asked on behalf of a friend in her mid-fifties who has chronic gastritis, and her doctor has said she should include probiotics in her diet. We seek your recommendation as to which sources of probiotics are compatible with (or supportive of) her particular mix of medications, whose brand names are: Omep, Bactrim,Bayer aspirin, Apo-atenol, Lasix, Amlodipine, Apo-pravastatin, and Ulcogant. That is, what are the good sources of probiotics for a person taking this mixture of med’s? Thanks in advance.

Brief Answer:
A healthy intestine is one that maintains a significant balance of bacteria such as lactobacilli, streptococci, clostridia, coliform, and Bacteroides.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I would initially give you a briefing on why you need a probiotic. There are both good and bad bacteria in our gut. If harmful microbes colonized our digestive system they will ferment food in incorrect ways and toxins, which will affect our health, might be produced. Probiotics are able to regenerate our digestive system with good microbes that will neutralize the harmful ones.

Useful microbes will ferment our food correctly and improve our health. Multiple medications treatment could destroy our useful microflora. In such cases, Probiotics should be used to regenerate our microflora.

I would suggest you take VSL#3 once daily. It can even be taken in twice daily doses initially.

Hope I was helpful.

Thanks

Regards
