Question: My mother, aged 55 is suffering from Osteoporosis. Her bones are brittle and cannot walk. What does it cost to get her treated in Hyderabad? She continues to be active, uses the wheel chair to move around the house.

Hello Udaysripathi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Osteoporosis is the thinning of bone tissue and loss of bone density over time. There are several medications used to treat osteoporosis, depending on gender and severity of disease. Medications themselves can be classified as antiresorptive or bone anabolic agents.

Bisphosphonate drugs are the first-line treatment in women and apart from that Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) like Raloxefene can often be prescribed. Teriparatide (Forteo) is also approved for the treatment of postmenopausal women who have severe osteoporosis and are considered at high risk for fractures. The medicine is given through daily shots underneath the skin and you can give these shots even at home. Another advantage is that it can be given in patients who cannot tolerate oral biphosphonate drugs.

Nowadays newer drugs like Denosumab (a fully human monoclonal antibody that mimics the activity of osteoprotegerin) and oral strontium ranelate are often prescribed for osteoporosis. There are no surgeries for treating osteoporosis itself.

All these are good drugs for your mother who is already having severe form and confined to wheelchair. There are little chances of her walking again but the goal of treatment now is to slow down or stop bone loss and prevent bone fractures with medicines that strengthen bone.

Apart from the medicines, give her calcium and vitamin D supplements and give her calcium XXXXXXX foods.

Since treatment involves examination and prescription of medicines and is devoid of any surgery, it will be cheap and will be in 2000-3000 Indian rupees. Treatment will continue for quite some times and your mother has to take the drugs regularly.

Hope this answers your query. If you have additional questions or follow up queries then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your queries.

Wishing your mother a good health.
