Brief Answer:
Good Morning!

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for coming to HCM! I will be happy to address your questions.

You ask about vitamin D. The most absorbable form is vitamin D3. The most common dosage taken is 1,ooo IU per day. The amounts of vitamin D we need in light of recent research shows a need to re-evaluate what many of us think is a recommendation that is too low for vitamin D seeing its effects on cancer, weight and a plethora of other bodily ill conditions. I usually replete with 5,000 IU D3 and maintain with 1,000 with a periodic vitamin D test. There is no specific "name", it is called Vitamin D3. I see another dr. has given you current lab norms.

We have not seen side effects with vitamin D except it may drive your blood calcium too high and then that is of concern. Again, a formally set upper limit is being debated. Vitamin D can be taken with water or milk. Take with milk if you want to absorb more calcium. Sun will not increase absorption much - distance from equator makes a difference- too many variables. Milk that is fortified with A and D is different than unfortified milk. There is no vitamin D in bananas or from unfortified food except fatty fish (fortified would be milk, yogurt, cereal).

Vitamin D will have to be consumed in some form or other your entire life.

I do not know why you have been told to take B12, or folic acid as vitamins such as these are preventively taken only when need is indicated. They have nothing to do with vitamin D. There is nothing to tell me you should be on a lifetime supplement of B12 or folic acid unless we are discussing childbearing age women or anemias of unknow origin. That comment disregard from your previous consult.

In terms of your exercise goals, keep well hydrated with any protein increase (above your normal increased fluid) and the best protein to take is isolated whey. Look for isolated as other forms of whey exist. And please don't get fooled by the casein mixtures for your intent, stick with isolated whey.

You may feel free to ask further clarifications. Thank you. Sincerely, XXXXXXX J. Shattler, MS,RDN
