Question: Opinion of an expert needed. I am 34 weeks pregnant. The last week scan detected a cystic lesion adjoining right of baby. We are very concerned. Is it related to any kind of down syndrome? There is not much info about this. Please advice what it could be and future course of action.

Brief Answer:
Not associated with Down syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. I have checked the ultrasound report. It shows the presence of a dacryocystocele and that has no association with Down syndrome.

The nasolacrymal ducts drain the excess tears from our eyes into the nasal cavity. In dacryocystocele there this tube gets blocked on either end and as a result when fluid collects in the intermediate patent section it forms a cystic structure. Usually simple treatments like probing (following birth) suffices. However, complications like swelling, watery eyes and infection might occur and suitable management might be needed. Surgery is usually not needed.

Let me know if I could help further.

Thank you Doctor.

1) How common and serious is this condition ?
2) Anything we should be worried about pre or post birth ?
3) Are there any chances that this gets settled by itself before birth
?

Brief Answer:
Questions answered one by one.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

1) Dacryocystocele is very rare. 1 in 3884 live births gets it. Regarding seriosity, it is not a life threatening condition but it can be bothersome. However, in a significant number of subjects it resolves quite easily.

2) Worrying does not help. After birth the condition needs to be assessed. Interventions can be taken depending upon the situation.

3) Very unlikely.
