What Does My MRI Scan Report Indicate?
Question: I just had an MRI for left hip pain. The report notes that there are moderate degenerative changes of the left hip, with joint space narrowing, diffuse cartilage thinning, osteophytes of the acetabelum and femur and areas of mild subcortical cystic change within the acetabelum and femur. There is a small joint effusion. Blunting of the superior aspect of the anterior labrum and of the superior labrum, possibly degenerative. All tendons are intact with no evidence of muscle or tendon tear. I was wondering how best to address this issue and if anything in the report would suggest that surgery is needed.

According to the report you have hip Osteoarthritis. This is an age related degenerative change of the joints.
The best treatment for this condition is Total hip replacement because the cartilage is thinned out and already osteophytes have built up. The pain shall increase severely if replacement isn't done. Once replacement is done you won't have to worry about arthritis. Also you may consider Arthroscopic debridement or cleaning up of your hip joint by key hole surgery but this won't cure the problem like Total hip replacement would.

I am a self employed attorney and cannot afford to be absent from my practice. How long would I have to be in the hospital and how long after surgery will it likely be before I can at least go to my office to meet clients?

Atleast a week if the surgery can be done immediately. Depends on cemented

You will need to be admitted for a pre operative workup with investigations before the surgery already a single day. Once the surgery is over, you may need to be at the Hospital for about 4 to 5 days. The stitches/skin staples of the Incision would be removed approximately 10 to 15 days after the surgery so you may have to see your Doctor at that time as well. You can start walking early if they use a non cemented prosthesis. But if they use a cemented prosthesis, then you won't be allowed weight bearing in the operated limb for a couple of weeks approximately.
