Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: My wife is pregnant and it's 28 week. CRP test was done last week and it came as positive around 19mg/l. Doctor has prescribed antibiotics and asked my wife to be in complete bed rest. I am too much worried. Can you please suggest whether the levels are too high and is there any risk ? . What should be done to bring it to normal?

Thanks

Brief Answer:
value is borderline high.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to HCM,

I can understand your concerns,

As you told CRP value is 19mg/dl at 28weeks.In pregnancy in each trimester it has different normal range.

Till 28weeks .4 to 20.3mg/dl is normal.after 28weeks .4 to 8.1mg/dl is normal.

Why your doctor has advised this test? Did she has any symptoms like leaking?

CRP is a non specific indication of infection in the body. Her levels are not too high. But
Raised CRP in association with the symptoms like leaking per vaginum can lead to preterm delivery.

I would suggest you to take antibiotics and bed rest as advised by your doctor. This will bring the levels normal.
She can keep pads for observing leaking regularly.

Hope this helps.
Take care.

Thanks for your prompt response.

she had leaking few days before during sleep. We were not sure whether it's amniotic fluid or some other discharge. Further tests were (like coughing) to see if there is any fluid leak but couldn't confirm as there was no leakage. The ultrasound was taken and it shows that her amniotic fluid levels are normal and the baby is good. Further she was kept in observation for couple of days and there is no leakage till now.CRP test was done (she was in her 27th week by then) and it came around 19.

Brief Answer:
safe to take antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
you are most welcome.

CRP level of 19 at 27 weeks is on higher side of normal.

As she had a leak (unsure of nature of fluid), it would be a safer idea to take antibiotics.

I would also advise her to take plenty of fluids, avoid heavy physical work, take adequate rest and take healthy food.

She can keep a pad for observation so that if there is a leak in future, she can easily notice.

Just keep regular follow-up with your doctor.
With these precautions, you need not take unnecessary tension.

I wish good health for your wife.

kindly close the discussion if you have no more queries and give your valuable feedback.

Thanks.
