What Does Frequent Urination Indicate In An Elderly Patient?
A detailed evaluation is required.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I have gone through your query and I can understand your concerns.
Considering your age, polyuria(frequent urination) is quite common and detailed evaluation is needed to find out what exactly causes this problem.
The following are the common causes of frequent urination in people older than 60.
1. Prostate enlargement.
An enlarged prostate can press against the urethra and thus causes irritation and frequent urination. You can go for an ultrasound to rule out the prostatic problem.
2.Diabetes.
Frequent urination with an abnormally large amount of urine is often an early symptom of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes as the body tries to rid itself of unused glucose through the urine.
Check your blood sugar level to rule out undetected diabetes.
3. Neurological disorder.
As you age, your nerves that control bladder function may get weaker and you might loss bladder control and thus cause frequent urination.
4. Urinary tract infection.
Urinary tract infection especially cystitis(inflammation of the bladder can cause excessive urination). Get a urine routine done to rule out UTI.
I suggest you consult a general practitioner and get evaluated. He will direct you accordingly
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
