Posted on Tue, 7 Jul 2015
Question: Hello,
I am scheduled for an CT/PET scan tomorrow morning for possible paraganglioma because of 3 24hr urine tests showing my adrenaline hormones being 5x higher then average. but Monday I had an ultrasound done because of a lump(felt like a swollen lymph node) in my neck on the right side under my jaw. I have a picture of it in hopes you could tell me anything about it. Thank you

Brief Answer:
thyroid nodules

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The images shown in the US are thyroid nodules. You will need to have a biopsy done of them called a fine needle aspiration. All thyroid nodules need this done because a small percentage of them are cancer and the only way to make sure that it is not cancer is to have the aspiration.
Don't panic, over 90% of thyroid nodules are benign, we just can't tell that with an US alone.
Your doctor will refer you to an ENT or a radiologist that does this procedure.

can you explain what the color inside the nodule is. are thyroid nodules common or is this something I should be concerned about?

Brief Answer:
color is blood flow

Detailed Answer:
The color is reflective of blood flow around the nodules. Thyroid nodules are very common so don't worry just make sure you get the fine needle aspiration done to be sure it is benign.
