What Do Stiffness And Pain In The Thumb And Wrist Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 28 Sep 2017
Question: Good Morning,

I am having problems with my hand. Specifically with my thumb and that area that leads down into the wrist. On my job I am cutting up vegetables but now I am in a good deal of pain. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning my thumb is really stiff, this morning I was not able to move it at all. It did come back to normal after I massaged that area and waited a little while. Do you have any suggestions for me? Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Could be de Quervain's tenosynovitis .

Detailed Answer:
Hi I am Dr Gopal Goel Orthopedic surgeon.
I have read the details of your pain.

In my opinion ,you have what we call de Quervain's tenosynovitis- A condition in which there is swelling of thumb tendons near wrist on outer side and is caused by repetitive movements like chopping vegetables.
I suggest pain killers and avoid cutting vegetables for 3-4 weeks. And if there is no relief then think in terms of local steroid injections.

Thanx for the question. Please feel free to ask any other question.
