Hi I am a male in my early 40 and have plantar fasiitis for last 8 months... have tried insoles, night splint stretches and exercise as well as taking anti inflame meds. Nothing has worked. Have had ex-ray as well as seeing at least 10 different doctors. cant work as unable to be on my feet for long periods of time. Am thinking of getting steroid injection in heel... At this stage am desperate to stop the pain... What are the success rate for this procedure and can local GP perform the injection

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement Dr. K. Naga Ravi Prasad's  Response
Hi, thanks for writing to HCM.

So it looks that you are fed up with the problem of Plantar fascitis.

OK. As all modes of conservative management have failed to provide pain relief, there are only 2 options left for you

(1) LOCAL STEROID INJECTION - A single injection of a long acting steroid given at the site of maximum tenderness will give good pain relief. The pain free period will be between 6 months to 18 months. Beware, it may not work in the same way for each and everyone. So try your luck.

(2) PARTIAL SURGICAL RELEASE OF PLANTAR FASCIA - Either open release or arthroscopic release will yield optimum results. The success rate is highly variable and is around 70%. So there is no guarantee that even surgical release will offer 100% pain relief.

Hope this information is helpful . Good day
