What Do My BP Test Results Indicate?

Question: Hi there, please review the question I submitted

I am a 32 year old male I weigh 9.5 stone approx and my heigh is approx 5.5.

Today my local chemist did a blood pressure check the first reading was 143/86 and the second reading a few mins later was 134/85. Six months ago my blood pressure reading was 123/80-90. I have had blood pressure monitors and holster monitors fitted before (in 2009 and 2011) and the results were fine.

Every 5 years I get checked for cardiomyophty and at my last check in XXXXXXX 2014 all was fine except I was advised to go for a blood pressure check which I did six months ago bad today.

Should I be worried about today's blood pressure result?

I run up to 10km and run a lot I walk about an hour a day and walk in a physically active job.

I am worried I am suffering for high blood pressure and will need to be treated for it through medication. I also have Cholesterol issues and six months ago it was 5.1 two years ago it was 5.6 and in 2011 it was 5.5.

Should I get further checks in the next for weeks to see if I have a blood pressure issues.

Can you please advise me.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
normal blood pressures

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

you are concerned about your blood pressure fluctuating during your recent office visit. This is not uncommon and is not indicative of any problems. Everyone's blood pressure changes minute to minute. The usually normal range for blood pressure is 100 -140 on the top number or systolic and 60-90 on the bottom number or diastolic. Your initial elevation could be simply an error or mildly elevated from walking into the office and getting a pressure too soon. I would not be concerned about your pressures at this time. I recommend continuing with your exercise program and diet. You can continue to have your pressures monitored weekly to monthly which ever you feel most comfortable with.

Hi Dr.Schubert,

Many thanks for answering my query. I had been sitting in the chemist waiting room for 30mins before they took my pressure but I had to walk from the waiting room to the consultation room and take off my coat etc so I'm presuming that caused the first reading yo high?

Just one other question relating to blood pressure is one large cup of coffee good or bad for trying to keep blood pressure down? I don't need to cut out coffee do I?

Thanks again for your advice.

Brief Answer:
Coffee may elevate blood pressure

Detailed Answer:
I agree just the fact that you had to walk in to the exam room and take off your coat may increase your pressure slightly. I would recommend continue intermittent monitoring just to be sure.

The coffee is something that may actually elevate blood pressure. Caffeine is a stimulant and that increases heart rate. With elevated heart rate the blood pressure also goes up. I don't think you need to stop your coffee but use it in moderation.

Thanks for using HCM
