What Causes Tiredness And Nausea When Suffering From Bladder Cancer?

default
Posted on Tue, 23 Dec 2014
Question: My Dad has stage 4 bladder cancer that has metastasized to his bones. He is very tired, nauseous a lot, sleeps 16+ hours a day. He has lost 5 pounds a week for the last few weeks. He started at 177 and now is down to 146. He is on hospice care. Is he nearing the end of this battle? He eats very little and said nothing tastes good now. The hospice nurse has not told me a definitive time frame.

Brief Answer:
Few days to a month maximum based on facts

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. I am sorry to hear about your father, and I would have preferred to know more about the exact staging and spread in order to predict life expectancy.

For now I shall provide a brief description with the information that I know about life expectancy:

1. If your father was operated to remove the cancer or surrounding lymph nodes if at all they were detected at a stage when surgery would have been helpful then your father may live for about 5 years or in some cases a little linger than that as well

2. If there is no spread to other organs yet then there is a life expectancy of about 5 years or less if at all there is spread to lymph nodes away from the affected organ

3. But as described by you cancer is present in more than one part and your father has showed signs of poor prognosis, the expected life expectancy is about 3-12 months with supporting chemo and radiotherapy. And without this, as you have described none of this the life expectancy and can from a few days to a mont maximum.

I am sorry to be the one reporting this to you. I wish you and your family all the strength you need to cope with this and pray for your father's sole. Please do not hesitate to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.

Thank u for your reply. He was also throwing up a bile-like substance today however he has no gall bladder. He was stage 4 with mets to lymph nodes in XXXXXXX for the bladder cancer. Stage 4 with node involvement as well for his head and neck cancer.

Brief Answer:
Sadly no more than 6 months of life is possible

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again.

I am extremely sorry to hear this and regret the developments.

As informed earlier ma'am, once the final stage has been diagnosed life expectancy is about a year from textbook knowledge. But from my experience some patients live for a few days after the diagnose and some go on to live longer than a year as well.

Your father's case does not seem good, and sadly I do not expect life expectancy to be more than 6 months. In fact with all the developments, it is sad to accept that it could happen anytime now.

I hope and pray God gives you and your family the strength to deal with these sad events and also open the gates of heaven for your father.

My best wishes.
