What Causes Thread Like Structure In Colon?

Posted on Mon, 23 Nov 2015
Question: 4 years ago I had XXXXXXX gastric bariactic surgery. Everything went fine. However I'm prepping for my 10 yr colonoscopy and expelled about 3" of what looked like surgical thread. It was nothing I ate and had several loop knots and was a heavy duty thread. Should I be concerned? Will they be able to see if something came undone during colonoscopy?

Brief Answer:
No need for concern

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You were prepping for your colonoscopy and you noticed a suture material in your stool. This suture material is none absorb-able and your body naturally expelled it from its suture site. The area that the suture cam from is way up in the GI tract high above where the colonoscopy wound reach. So the colonoscopy would not be able to see the area.

Also since you are in no pain the loss of the suture material did not cause any opening of the incision and is therefore all healed.

If you collected the suture I would show it to your doctor more as a curiosity.

In summary
1. Colonoscopy can proceed as planned
2. Colonoscopy will not reach high enough to see the gastric bypass area
3. No danger of incision or surgery coming apart.

I hope I answered your question. If you have any additional questions please contact us again
